ANC, explained: what noise cancellation can and cannot do

Active noise cancellation (ANC) is a mirror trick. A microphone on the outside of the bud hears the incoming noise; the electronics play an identical copy of it upside down - the same loudness but in opposite phase, so where one wave peaks the other dips - through the speaker. Peak meets trough, and the two sound waves cancel before they reach your eardrum12. The physics is real and the effect is dramatic - on one specific family of sounds5. Knowing which family is the difference between a great purchase and an overpriced one.
What it cancels: the steady drone
ANC eats low-frequency, steady noise: engines, air-conditioners, the train’s rumble, traffic hum. Those are steady, repeating sound waves the chip can track and mirror in real time212. What it struggles with is the opposite kind: human speech and sudden, unpredictable sounds. There is a hard physical reason - real ANC’s cancellation drops off in the region around 1,000 Hz (cycles per second - the pitch measure), which sits right in the middle of the speech band - so the colleague talking two desks away survives the electronics811. A crash or a honk happens too fast for the mirror to form910.
What the seal does: the sharp stuff
High-pitched and sudden noise is blocked the old way - physically. A closed earcup or a well-sealed eartip is passive isolation, and it outperforms any chip on voices and clatter precisely because it is not listening, just obstructing67. This is why ANC earbuds are measured with their tips sealed: electronics and seal stack. A Rs 1,500 wired in-ear with foam tips blocks voices better than many Rs 8,000 ANC buds - it just does nothing about the bus engine, which is where the chip wins6.
The battery bill
The mirror trick runs on a chip, and the chip runs on the battery. The numbers are published, and they are consistent: Sony’s WH-1000XM5 over-ears promise up to 30 hours of playback with ANC on versus 40 with it off; the WF-1000XM5 buds manage 8 hours ANC-on against 12 ANC-off - a third of your listening time, spent on silence34. Budget sets lose proportionally more, because their batteries are smaller to begin with. Real users report the same shortfall the specs predict13. Practical rule: if the trip is short, ANC on; if the bud must survive the day, keep a mode toggle one tap away.
Transparency: the reverse gear
Most ANC buds also do the inverse - transparency mode: microphones pick up the outside world and play it into your ear, so you can hear announcements or traffic without removing the buds. It is the same hardware working for the street instead of against it210.
Buying it in India
The commute case is genuinely strong: metro and bus drone is exactly the sound ANC was built to erase, and transparency handles the platform announcement. The office case is weaker - voices are the one thing the chip will not take from you, so do not pay an ANC premium for an open-plan desk811. For pure quiet on a budget, a sealed in-ear with foam tips (see the eartips guide) is the honest passive alternative. Every set in the TWS (true-wireless) section carries its ANC credentials and daily tracked prices, the battery guide shows how to read the hours honestly, and any candidate can be lined up on a head-to-head page before you spend.
