How to read battery-life claims (and why yours never matches)

MOONDROP - Nice Buds 15.4mm Dynamic Driver Wired Earbuds - Transparent / With Mic
Every TWS listing here spells out per-charge and with-case hours - now they can be read honestly. MOONDROP - Nice Buds 15.4mm Dynamic Driver Wired Earbuds - Transparent / With Mic →

The box promises 40 hours. You get three and a half per bud, and the case takes you to Thursday. Nobody lied - but the claim was written in a language with four small asterisks nobody prints. Here is the language, translated.

The three assumptions inside every claim

  1. "Up to" means moderate volume. Labs and brands measure at a fixed, moderate output - around half volume on the phone scale. Loud listening costs hours, roughly linearly11.
  2. The headline hour is with ANC off. Noise cancellation (ANC - the electronics that erase outside sound) is processing work for the chip that never sleeps. Brands do publish ANC-on figures - in the small row of the spec table513.
  3. "With case" means arithmetic, not one charge. "Up to 30 hours with case" means, say, 6 hours per bud charge plus a case that recharges the buds four times. The bud itself still holds the small number910.

The case maths, done once

Total life = per-charge hours x (case recharges + 1). The "+1" is the charge already in the buds. Bose’s QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds are a clean example: 6 hours per charge, a case that adds 3 full recharges - 6 x 4 = 24 hours, exactly as the maker states7, and lab testing of the second-generation set landed within that same arithmetic8. So when a listing says "40 hours total", divide by the case’s recharges plus one to find what you actually get per sitting - 40 hours from a case that recharges four times means 8 honest hours per bud charge10.

What ANC really costs

Published pairs make the tax visible. Sony’s WF-1000XM5: 8 hours per charge with ANC on, 12 with it off - a third of the listening time buys the silence. Their over-ear WH-1000XM5: 30 hours ANC-on versus 40 off345. Labs confirm the pattern down the price ladder: Rtings measured the budget-favourite Soundcore Space A40 at 8.1 hours continuous with ANC on - good, but below its headline figure12. Real-world reports match: the number on the box is every best case happening at once613.

How the serious testers measure

So what does a trustworthy number look like? Labs calibrate the buds to a fixed output level, play a continuous signal, and time-stamp the actual shutdown - Rtings and SoundGuys both publish the method, which is why their measured hours land slightly under the maker’s claim, consistently, by design123. One reviewer who set every earbud in a batch to the exact same volume before timing them found the measured results sitting around 10% below the marketing numbers across the board4 - a gap worth budgeting for, not a scandal.

The translation routine

  1. Find per-charge hours, not the case total9.
  2. Subtract roughly a third if you run ANC512.
  3. Subtract more if you listen loud11.
  4. The remainder is your real number. Judge the purchase on that.

Every listing in the TWS (true-wireless) section keeps its spec rows - per-charge and with-case - next to daily tracked prices, so the maths above can be done on the product page itself. Pair it with the price-timing guide before buying, and the codec guide explains the other silent battery drain: a Bluetooth radio link straining in crowded signal areas.
