Not a tuning - a lab chart. A DAC or amp is engineered to add nothing of its own: what it contributes is distortion and a noise floor. This is the distortion chart engineers write those on - drag the sliders, try the presets, hear the effect.

  • The tall ink line is the 1 kHz test note itself.
  • Gold spikes at 2, 3, 4 kHz are harmonics - ghost copies the converter adds on top of the music.
  • The blue line is the noise floor: everything below it drowns in silence.
  • Reality check: distortion under 0.01% and a floor past 96 dB already sit under what ears can detect - which is why real-world differences between DACs come from features, power and build, not these numbers.

How the match is computed: each measured curve is interpolated linearly in log-frequency onto a shared log-spaced grid of 40 points, 20 Hz-10 kHz, then level-aligned by subtracting each curve's mean over the 200 Hz-1 kHz slice of that grid (12 points, ~186 Hz-~1.07 kHz), so rig level offsets don't count. The two curves are then compared at the same 40 frequencies, and the root-mean-square (RMS) of those 40 dB differences is the distance: similarity % = 100 - 6 × RMS dB, rounded and clamped to 0-100 - so every 1 dB of RMS difference costs exactly 6 points. Labels: under 1 dB "Near identical", under 2.5 dB "Very close", under 4 dB "Close". Matches past 4 dB RMS are never shown - past that the treble differences are clearly audible and calling two tunings alike is not defensible, so if a product has no match under 4 dB this section does not appear. Only real measurements enter the index (20+ raw points per curve); matches pair the same form factor only (in-ear with in-ear, headphone with headphone - different rigs are never compared), and curves under 0.5 dB apart are treated as the same-tuning re-listing and never matched, so a match is always a different model. A measurement-space fact, not a promise two ears agree.

A match covers tuning only. Two products can measure near-identical and still differ in everything a frequency-response curve cannot see - build and shell material (metal vs plastic), durability, driver matching and QC unit-to-unit, comfort, fit and isolation, included cable and accessories, warranty and after-sales service, resale value. That is usually what the pricier one is charging for - weigh those against the price gap before paying more for the "same" sound.
