Lossless audio in India: which service, and where it actually reaches your ears

A Rs 1,000-class USB-C dongle: the cheapest piece of a genuinely lossless chain. AUDIOCULAR BEAM Hi-Res Portable DAC Dongle CX31993 + MAX Amp →

Lossless means the streaming file arrives bit-for-bit identical to the studio recording - CD quality is 1,411 kbps (kilobits per second - the amount of data flowing each second), roughly four times the data of a 320 kbps stream. India’s streaming market finally offers it from more than one place, at very different prices - and then a hard physical ceiling decides whether it ever reaches your ears. Both halves below.

The services, as of today

ServiceLossless in IndiaThe catch
Apple MusicYes - up to 24-bit/192 kHz (above-CD resolution: more data, more detail), included since 2021123The above-CD tiers need an external USB DAC (a small adapter that turns the digital file into a headphone signal)3
SpotifyYes, since late 2025 - up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC (a lossless file format)4Locked to the Premium Platinum tier, above standard Premium5
TIDALNot officially available - India is absent from its supported-country list67Workarounds mean foreign payment and VPNs - not a real option

Apple’s is the standout: lossless at the standard Rs 139 individual plan, no tier upgrade - a price position no competitor matches in India12. Spotify’s Lossless finally launched in September 2025 and reached India bundled into its top tier45.

The Bluetooth ceiling

Here is the part the marketing skips. Bluetooth’s best common codec (the squeezing recipe that fits audio through the radio link), LDAC, tops out at 990 kbps - below CD’s 1,411 - and is itself lossy compression, permanently discarding some of the data, stepping down further to 660 or 330 kbps whenever the airwaves are busy89. So no wireless earbud can receive a full lossless stream, whatever the app is sending. How much that matters is an empirical question: careful listeners and measurement communities have long argued the difference between a 990 kbps lossy link and the full file is marginal in controlled listening - and blind-test evidence backs the broad point that codec gaps at these rates are hard to hear at all1011. The tuning of the earbud, as everywhere on this site, dominates the pipe.

Where lossless genuinely lands

Wired - and it is cheaper than you think. Any USB-C-to-3.5 mm dongle with a proper DAC chip decodes CD-quality lossless completely: a Rs 1,000-class stick like the Audiocular Beam or JCALLY JM12 does it, and for hi-res tiers Apple itself instructs using an external DAC anyway3111213. Chain: Apple Music + a dongle + any well-tuned wired IEM (in-ear monitor) from the IEM section = a genuinely lossless signal path for about Rs 3,000 beyond the IEM. The upgrade path (a dual-output unit like the Moondrop Dawn Pro) buys power for full-size headphones, not fidelity (faithfulness to the recording) - the DAC guide explains where money actually matters.

The verdict

  1. On wired: lossless is real, can genuinely be heard on a good wired chain, and costs a dongle - do it.
  2. Over Bluetooth: the codec is the ceiling; spend on tuning first (see the codec guide) and treat lossless subscriptions as a convenience8910.
  3. On the fence? Trial Apple’s lossless over a wired connection against the standard 256 kbps stream on the same tracks, through one well-measured IEM - your ears, your verdict, no badge required.
